Erm… i think Double eyelid do makes your eyes look bigger and nice but single eyelid have their beautiful side.It depends on your desire. My mother actually have single eyelid when she’s young but she wanted double eyelids so she started to stick double eyelids tape. After months, she one of her eye became double eyelid. Then another eye of hers become double too, after she had a fever. Double eyelid also can be form without surgery. i am trying this method too! ^^

Westerners making xenophobic cracks about slitty eyes are one thing. When it comes from other east or southeast Asians it's another can of worms altogether...

I'm Chinese Malaysian and was told by a lady in the Philippines that I couldn't be Chinese because "your eyes aren't squinty enough!" (I do have "regular"/"single" eyelids but my eyes are a bit bigger than average...maybe.)

Another Chinese Malaysian young woman I know recently moved to Singapore (our more prosperous and image-conscious neighbour), she said people kept complimenting her on her double eyelids and one even asked if she had had plastic surgery. *gobsmacked*

You wonder if this type of person lives in a world of stereotypes and also thinks all white women are blonde and big-breasted like Barbie...

I don't think that's it...since when is large round eyes considered a Western ideal? I thought Hollywood is all about the fierce seductive (aka squinty) cat eye look. Think Adriana Lima or Angelina Jolie with their smokey eye makeup. Generally East Asians are going for the cute and innocent look, while Westerners prefer sexy and gorgeous.

I agree with Schteevee, people need to get real here. Try to dig at it a little and look at all the power structures in place and who are imposing the ideals of beauty and why we need to use eye shadow (which will help line cosmetics companies' pockets nicely) and all the rest of it. Sure, you can deny that people get double eyelid surgery to "Westernise" themselves, but who has perpetuated the current global beauty myth about big eyes, light skin, long legs, big boobs, etc? Hollywood and Western media are very handy tools that are used to great effect to impose Western ideals and myths like the American dream on the rest of the world, and that has been picked up and emulated by Asian TV, movies, and media. If people want to deny that Western propaganda doesn't have an effect, they can do so, but they are only kidding themselves. And when you really boil it down, it's not even about Westernisation, it's about submission to the dominant beauty ideal that happens to be going and is being perpetuated by whoever is in power. At the moment, the US is the global hegemon. That may change in the future, and if you don't think Hollywood is also a political/power tool, well, China does, cos it's gonna try and set up a rival Chinese-style Hollywood for those very reasons, to sell China as a global standard to emulate. Getting insulted because someone is telling you you're doing surgery to look more Western is entirely missing the point - unless it's for health or vision reasons, you're getting the double lid surgery because you have been conditioned to think that double lids look better than single. And conditioning is usually done by those in power.

My eyes are big + I've double eyelids, but it made my face looked savage...
People who don't know me are usually afraid to befriend with me...so, sometimes I feel quite sad...
But, I'm happy with my face coz there's only one in this world!
Come on! appreciate your natural self!!

p/s: I don't think big eyes, double eyelids, white skin will make u pretty...
Like what my sister always said, beauty is abstract and the true beuty lies in ur heart...

Everyone seems to be saying that people want double eyelids for one reason and one reason only--either to look western or to look like other Asians who naturally have double eyelids. Can't we just agree that people do things for different reasons? The idea of double eyelids being beautiful may predate western cultural influence but the profound influence American and European media have had on Asia over the past 50 years or so has probably increased the preference for double eyelids quite a bit. Nowadays people may not think about it as so much of an Eastern/Western thing since so many Asians stars have had the surgery (or naturally have double eyelids) but to say looking Caucasion has nothing to do with it is absurd. Maybe no one tells the surgeon "I want to look white" explicitly, but this doesn't mean that the western beauty ideal isn't at least subconsciously playing a part.

I live in Thailand and I see this ideal everywhere: eyelid surgery, colored contact lenses, people dying/bleaching their hair. It's nearly impossible to buy skin cream that doesn't have a "whitening" effect. I suppose you could say that this is just what people think is beautiful and ethnicity has nothing to do with it but then it's a pretty big coincidence that all the hallmarks of "beauty" happen to be traits found in people of European descent.

I live in Sydney and i get mine from Westfield in Parramatta, From that little store Iristar. It takes a bit of time to get the hang of it, and if you don't get a good quality one it can hurt a bit.

well....I'm asian/chinese and my eyes aren't really slanted, and I have natural double eyelids. I find them really annoying to tell the truth. For example, if I happen to cry one day, the next morning my eyes will have a single eyelid. I'm really glad I'm asian, actually...real proud of it!
